Bribery Laws in Douglas County

Bribery Laws
Bribery Laws

Bribery laws in Douglas County, Colorado prohibit people from offering money or other benefits to influence a public official. These actions are dangerous for both the person who offers the bribe itself as well as the official on the receiving end as harsh punishments exist for conviction. While many see this crime involving large amounts of money and politicians, something like offering a police officer funds to get out of a ticket can even be considered an act of bribery. Consult an experienced criminal defense attorney right away if you’re being accused of bribery in the state of Colorado.

Douglas County Bribery Law

Douglas County’s bribery law makes using money to influence public figures unlawful. CRS 18-8-302 defines the specific acts of bribery throughout Colorado. You commit this offense in Castle Rock, Parker, or Highlands Ranch if you:

  • offer or provide any pecuniary benefit to a public servant intending to influence their vote, opinion, judgement, discretion, or other action,
  • or as a public servant, you solicit, accept, or agree to accept any pecuniary benefit to influence the above actions

Bribery often comes in the form of money but can also involve offers of promises or favors, property, or commercial interests. Public servants include a wide range of positions including government employees, prosecutors, mayors, senators, city clerks, health officials, and police officers.

Is Bribery Always a Felony in Colorado?

Most bribery cases in Colorado are class 3 felonies. Defendants face the following for conviction:

  • 4 – 12 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections,
  • fines of $3K – $750K,
  • 5 years of parole

A felony conviction in Colorado can block individuals from holding public office, strip them of professional licenses, and make finding and maintaining substantial employment difficult.
